"I can't believe we played like this," National manager Danny Miller said. "We're a much better team than this. We've been playing real good ball in the tournament, and then we go and do something like this. "I'm very upset at this, we're better than they are, but you don't win games with errors like we had today." The score had been tied, 4-4, going into the top of the sixth when Jesse Tomalewski led off the inning by hitting the first pitch from Cumberland starter Travis Jesse over the center field fence for a leadoff solo home run to give National a 5-4 lead. National added another run on an RBI, infield single by Leroy Ambush, and the District II champions led, 6- 4 Then, in the bottom of the sixth, things began to fall apart for National. Doug Gilmore led off the Cumberland half of the sixth by reaching first base on an error. Another error enabled Ron Powell to reach first, and Gilmore moved to second. Gilmore then moved up one base on a wild pitch, and scored when Brad Lease grounded out to third base. Cumberland tied the score on the next play when Jesse reached first on another National error Angelo Basselli hit a single to center field, which moved Jesse to second. Another error by National moved Jesse to third, and he scored on yet another error. Ambush, Zak Barklev and Tomalewski each had two hits for National. Barklev had a solo homerun. Craig Butler went the distance on the mound for National and suffered the loss, giving up just two earned runs. "Craig pitched really well," Miller said. "He was a little frustrated when we committed those errors and wondered a little bit as to what he was supposed to do We just told hint to keep doing what he had been doing. It wasn't his fault,"

Cumberland Dan tops National LL for title
BRUNSWICK - Angeio Basselli's grand slam home run in the last of the fourth inning, along with his three-hit pitching, gave Cumberland Dan the Section I Little League championship with a 14-3 win against National, Saturday The win, which gave Cumberland a sweep of the best-of-three championship series, means the Allegheny County team advances to the state Little League Tournament this week at Maryland City (Fort Meade) Cumberland was already holding a 4-0 lead in the fourth, with one out when things began falling apart for National. Brian Powell reached base on an error, and Brad Lease followed with a single up the middle. Travis Jesse then reached base on another National error. Basselii stepped to the plate and hit a long fly ball to left field. The baseball barely cleared the left field fence, some 180 feet away from home plate, but it was enough for the grand slam, and it gave Cumberland an 8-0 lead. Before that half of the inning was over, Cumberland would send 13 batters to the plate and score five more runs for a total of nine runs for the inning "They've got a good team," National manager Danny Miller said. "They were hitting the ball through the holes We hit the ball like that on Thursday, but they always had someone right there to get it." Cumberland scored one final run in the fifth on a National error. National got its three runs in the fifth on a Cumberland error, and a two run single by David Ellis. Basselii, offensively, finished the game with two hits m three tries and four RBIs. all coming on his grand slam homer in the fourth. Defensively, he held National to three hits, fanned 12 and walked four. "He had a good mixture of fastballs and curveballs," Miller said. "He had us off balance." For National, Leroy Ambush had two hits.

National 14, Thurmont 9
Frederick National blew a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but rebounded with an eight-run burst in the bottom of the inning and went on to down visiting Thurmont 14-9, in a winners' bracket game, Thursday, at Staley Stadium. National took the 5-0 lead mainly on the strength of a pair of two-run home runs by David Ellis. But in the top of the fourth Thurmont rallied for five runs. An RBI double by Lucas Putman, a one-run single by Rusty Wood, a pinch-hit RBI single by Kevin Eiker, a pinch-hit RBI double by Brad Karbeling and a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Matt Weddle tied the score at 5. Then, in the last of the fourth, National sent 11 batters to the plate for its eight runs off a three-run triple by Brian James, a sacrifice fly by Matt Palm and three Thurmont errors. When it was over, National had regained a 13-5 advantage, and it did not trail in the game again. National scored one more run in the fifth on an infield single by John Hurst. Thurmont scored four runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by Jason Jenkins, a one-run double by Eiker and a National error. Ambush led National with three hits, including a double, while Ellis, Hurst and James each had two hits. Both of Ellis' hits were his homers and one of James’ hits was his triple. Ellis was the winning pitcher for National. Putman led Thurmont with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Eiker and Mike Irvine each had two hits. One of Biker's hits was hit double in the sixth.

Kapp, Centineo lead American past National
American used Chris Centineo's pitching, Justin Kapp's hitting and errors by the opposition to cruise to a 16-2 victory over National on Monday in the winners' bracket of the District II Little League Tournament at Staley Stadium. American advances to the championship game, which will be played on Friday at a site to be determined later. National goes to the losers' bracket, where it will play 6 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of today's game between Westminster and host Thurmont, which is also at 6 p.m. Centineo was spotted a four-run lead before he even set foot on the mound, as two National errors helped fuel a four-run American rally in the top of the first inning. After Phil Roberson drew a bases loaded walk to give American a 1-0 lead, Centineo hit a ground ball that got by an infielder and an outfielder. Nick Kefauver, Lamar West (who had also reached on an error) and Roberson all scored on the play. Centineo, who threw a two-hitter, proved not to need any more scoring. He went the distance, striking out seven, walking three and allowing no earned runs in picking up the win. At the plate, Centineo reached on an error three times on Monday, including once in the fourth inning on a play where two more runs scored. But Kapp proved that American didn't have to rely solely on errors to spark its offense, Kapp went three-for-five with two home runs and seven RBI. Kapp, who had hit a grand slam in last week's win over Westminster, hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning and concluded American's scoring with a monstrous grand slam homer over the left field fence in the sixth. Kefauver went two-for-three and Robbie Waskom went two-for-four for American. Although the Scoreboard didn't reflect it, National starter Leroy Ambush didn't pitch badly, but his team committed eight errors and he left the game trailing 12-1. Ambush, a hard thrower who worked five innings, struck out eight. Ambush also had one of his team's two hits, an RBI single up the middle that scored Tommy Wasniewski. David Ellis' single also came in the third inning. Marc West scored National's second run in the sixth inning, when he reached on an error and eventually scored on another error.

Thurmont gains district finals
Thurmont rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and propelled itself into the District II Little League Championship by beating National 6-4 in the losers' bracket at Leisner Field on Wednesday. Thurmont will face host American at 6 p.m. Friday for the championship. Since American has yet to be beaten, Thurmont would have to win twice, while American would only have to win once. Thurmont, which had lost 14-9 to National earlier in the tournament, squandered an early 3-1 lead and trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth. But Thurmont used three hits and two crucial errors to eliminate National from the tournament. Jason Jenkins helped Thurmont manufacture the tying run. After Mike Irvine led off the fifth with a single, Jenkins lined a single into left field. Irvine ended up being erased on Troy Eyler's fielders' choice, but Jenkins ended up on third base after Eyler and Wood both reached base. And with two outs, as the National catcher threw the ball back to the pitcher, Jenkins maintained an extended lead off of third base. When the pitcher tried to catch Jenkins off base, his throw went past the third baseman and Jenkins scored to tie the game at four. Matt Schultz then hit a ground ball that resulted in a throwing error, allowing Eyler and Wood to score. Irvine went two-for-three with an RBI, while Jenkins went two-for-three and scored two runs. Eyler, who went the distance for the victory, struck out seven and threw a one hitter. But National took advantage of the walks he issued to stay in the game.

East Frederick, despite committing eight errors, stayed in the game and with one out in the top of the seventh and the score tied at 8, scored twice to win the game. Cone O'Bryan doubled to left field and National pitcher Matt Palm walked Mike Garner. O'Bryan then moved to third on a passed ball and Gamer stole second. Seal, in his first plate appearance since entering the game in the sixth, singled to left to score O'Bryan and Garner, and give his team an 8-6 lead, one it would not relinquish. East Frederick went ahead, 4-3, in the third on a one-run double by Terrance Taylor and a National error, but the host team regained the lead in the last of the third on a one run single by Greg Hessler, a fielder's choice and a hit batter, scoring three total runs and giving National a 6-4 lead. National tops Thurmont
Frederick National advanced in the loser's bracket of the District II Little League Tournament with an 11-4 won over Thurmont Tuesday at the Robert B. Staley Memorial Stadium. Frederick National will play the winner of tonight's Brunswick-Westminster game Thursday. That game was scheduled for Tuesday, but it was postponed until 6 p.m. today because a truck trailer fell onto Westminster's Bennett Cerf Park and couldn't be removed by game time. The trailer didn't reach the playing surface, according to District II administrator Greg Quedeweit, but landed near it after rolling down an embankment that led from a parking lot next to the field. In the Frederick-Thurmont game, the top of the second inning proved to be the turning point as National took a 4-1 lead that it never lost. Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the second, National's Michael Hudson led off with a walk and reached third on a double by Luke Yanike. Yanike went to third when Lance Vogeler hit into a fielder's choice that forced Hudson out at home. Bradley Crum walked to load the bases, then Joseph Geisbert drew a walk, which scored Hudson and knotted the score at one. Frederick National took its first lead of the game when Jeff Hayes walked allowing Vogeler to score. Crum and Geisbert eventually scored on a fielder's choice and an error by the second baseman to increase the lead to 4-1. Frederick National preserved the win scoring four runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Highlighting Tuesday's game was a three-run homerun by Frederick National's Matt Palm in the top of the fourth inning. Wayne Kerns homered for Thurmont in the bottom of the fifth inning, while Josh Colson, Kevin Sunday and starting pitcher Jeff Eyler each scored a run in the losing cause. Palm got the win, while Eyler took the loss.

Brunswick nips National
BRUNSWICK - Brad Gaither's bases-loaded, sacrifice fly in the last of the sixth inning gave Brunswick a 3-2 win against Frederick National in the losers' bracket semifinals of the District II Little League baseball tournament, Friday. Brunswick advances to today's losers' bracket championship game against Frederick American at 6 p.m. at Austin F. Angleberger Memorial Stadium, home of American. The loss eliminates National from the district tournament. Today's winner advances to Monday's 6 p.m. championship, where it will face unbeaten, and winners' bracket champion, East Frederick. Reese Roberts led off the last of the sixth for Brunswick with a single up the middle, and was doubled to third by Neil Howard, who bounced the baseball over the left-center field fence for a ground rule double Ryan Main then drew a walk to load the bases, and Gaither hit a long fly ball to right field, which allowed Roberts to score on the sacrifice fly to win the game for Brunswick. Brunswick had just escaped a National threat in the top of the sixth. Michael Hudson had drawn a leadoff walk, but was forced at second when Luke Yanike hit into a fielder's choice. Tommy Wasniewski beat out a pinch-hit single that put Yanike at second. The next batter, Wayne Naylor, hit into a fielder's choice and Yanike was tagged out heading to third. With Wasniewski at second and Naylor at first, Bradley Crum then hit a grounder deep to the hole just past second base. But Brunswick shortstop Justin Wilt snagged the grounder on his knees, and then stretched out to tag second base to force out Naylor and save a potential go-ahead run. National took a 1-0 lead in the second on Hudson's leadoff solo home run beyond the center field fence. But Brunswick tied the score at 1 in the last of the third on a one run single by Zack Borden. National regained the lead, 2-1, in the fourth on a Brunswick error before Brunswick tied the score at 2-2 in the last of the fifth on another RBI single by Borden. Borden led Brunswick with two hits while Howard was the winning pitcher, hurling a three-hitter. Tyler Wingerd did the pitching for National, giving up six hits.

National beats Brunswick
Frederick National survived a controversial call in the last of the fifth inning, then scored five runs in the top of the sixth, breaking a 3-3 tie, and defeating Brunswick, 8-3, in the winners' bracket finals of the District II Little League Tournament, Wednesday, at Robert B Staley Memorial Stadium The win means National is the only unbeaten team left in the double elimination tournament and will host the district championship game at 6 pm., Saturday. Brunswick is now in the losers's bracket finals, where it will face today's Westminster at Frederick American (Austin F. Angleberger Memorial Stadium) winner at 6 p m , Friday, at a site to be determined later. Today's Westminster at American game begins at 6 p m. National led Brunswick, 3-0, going into the last of the fifth with none out and Joey Alderman on base with a leadoff double for Brunswick when the controversy took place Mike Beachley reached first base on an error when the National first baseman dropped the throw from the infield. He had been called out at first, but the call was changed when the first baseman dropped the baseball Seconds later, as Alderman moved to third on the play, Beachley was initially called out for being off the base and abandoning his position at first. This brought Brunswick manager Jeff Axline out of the dugout for a discussion with the umpiring crew on the matter. Axline contended since Beachley had not crossed the field and returned to the Brunswick dugout, he had not abandoned his position at first and filed a protest. District II administrator Gregg Quedeweit then ruled the out call was correct. Then, Axline asked for an appeal, which can only be made to national Little League headquarters at Williamsport, Pa. The telephone call was made and play was suspended for several minutes while a ruling was awaited. Officials at Williamsport ruled since Beachley had not returned to his dugout, he had in fact not abandoned his position at first base, and the out call was reversed. When play resumed, Alderman scored on a wild pitch, and Andy Maught belted a two run home run over the right field wall to give Brunswick a 3-3 tie. That score, however, didn't hold. In the top of the sixth, National scored five runs to win the game. A two-run double by Ryan Hawthorne gave the winners all the runs they would need to win the game. Kenny Hammond and Ira Benoit each had a one-run single and the filth run scored on an error. National had taken the early lead in the game, 2-0, in the first on a two run homer by Joseph Geisbert. Billy Kruger struck out 11 Frederick American batters through five innings of pitching and his teammates stranded 13 runners on base, pacing Frederick National to its first District II Little League championship in four years with a 9-5 win in the title game, Tuesday, at Robert B. American was leading, 2-1, after one inning when play was suspended because of rain When play resumed Tuesday, Dominique Smallwood belted a three-run home run in the top of the second to give National a 4-2 lead and set a pace for a back-and-forth battle, which lasted throughout the game. "We weren't hitting early, but it was just a matter of time before we got things going," Miller said. "Billy gutted it out on the mound today." Kruger issued seven walks during Tuesday's game. He was relieved in the sixth by Jonas Dorsey, who one hit American with three strikeouts and no walks. "We just couldn't get the key hits with the bases loaded," American coach Todd Crum said. "If we could have done that, we might have been able to put their backs to the wall and stay in the game " A Richard Baker one-out solo home run and a Brandon Cunningham single gave American a 2-1 lead in the first after Kenny Hammond's RBI double gave National the initial, 1-0 lead in the game American pulled within one with a single run in the third on a groundout, and in the last of the fourth, American regained the lead with a pair of runs. National forces deciding playoff game
Frederick National forced the District II Little League Tournament into an extra game to decide the district championship with a 5-1 win over Frederick American on Monday at Austin F. Angleberger Memorial Stadium. National, the defending district champion and champions of the losers' bracket in this year's tournament., needed to defeat previously-unbeaten American to stay alive in the double-elimination event. Today's winner faces Baltimore County at noon Saturday in the first round of the state Little League tournament at Hagerstown's Staley Park. National defends District title
Frederick National's Little League baseball team had to get up pretty early in the morning to prepare for Frederick American pitching. The team took batting practice in the morning then teed off at night, pounding out 15 hits to beat American. 16-6, in the District II Little League championship game at Robert B. Staley Stadium. The game ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule. It was the second straight District II title for National, which had to fight back through the losers' bracket. National advances to the state tournament in Hagerstown, where it will play at noon on Saturday. "American has a good team, and we worked on our hitting to contend with their fast pitching," said National coach Danny Miller, who helps throw batting practice. "I've got a sore arm because of all of those two-a-day batting practices, and my coaches have sore arms." "We battled, but they hit the ball too well." said American coach Wayne Main. "They had a lot of hitters on that team from top to bottom." National had been playing a lot of low-scoring games, and Miller said he was waiting for the team to "break out." American trailed 6-4 after the third inning, but National put the game out of reach by bashing eight extra-base hits over the final two innings. Donnie Wilhelm's homer and Dominique Smallwood's triple sparked National's four-run fourth, and Travis Conder's three-run homer highlighted National's six run fifth. Lukas Spurrier had three hits for National, and Darnell Edmonds had two doubles. Smallwood and Wilhelm each added two hits. Smallwood pitched all five innings for National. Although he held American to seven hits and struck out six, he sort of got roughed up in the fifth. In the top of the fifth Smallwood hurt his heel while running over first base to beat out a throw. With assistance from a coach, Smallwood hopped off the field. Smallwood returned in the bottom of the fifth with no apparent difficulty, but leaving the mound proved to be more difficult. After the final out, he was tackled and piled on by his teammates. Smallwood, Edmonds, Danny Spurrier and John Brennan are the only returners from last year's District championship team. Rich Baker led American, going 2-for-2 with a solo homer in the fourth and two runs scored. Brian Anderson had two hits.

National Little League splits in state tourney
HAGERSTOWN — A combination of physical and mental errors has put Frederick National into the losers' bracket of the Little League State Tournament. After playing near-flawless baseball in a 6-2 tourney-opening win against Arbutus on Saturday, National was beaten by Elkton, 4-3, on Sunday thanks to its sloppy play early in the game. The loss means National faces St. Mary's tonight at 8 p.m. with the loser being ousted from the double-elimination tournament. St. Mary's eliminated Capitol City (Washington) earlier Sunday. 9-0. Capitol City was the defending Little League state champion. "We know what we have to do now," National manager Danny Miller said. "We have to win five straight games to stay in the tournament and win it." National must now play every day in order to come out of the losers' bracket and have a chance at winning the state title. "We made some base running mistakes and costly errors." Miller said. "That got us in trouble early." Dominique Smallwood pitched well for National but his team's defensive lapses early overshadowed his effort. He pitched the entire game and was saddled with the loss. But he gave up five hits, struck out eight and issued just two walks. Smallwood struck out the side in the first but three National errors in the second allowed Elkton to score two unearned runs for a 2-0 lead. Donnie Wilhelm's one-out solo home run over the center field fence in the last of the second cut Elkton's lead to 2-1. Elkton got that run back in the third on an RBI groundout and scored its final run in the sixth on a wild pitch. National missed an opportunity to tie the score in. the fifth with two out when Smallwood doubled to the corner in left field and advanced to third on a passed ball. John Brennan drew a walk and ball four got away from Elkton catcher Joe Monlras. Smallwood tried to score on a wild pitch but Montras regrouped in time to get the loose baseball and tag Smallwood out at home. The city team missed another opportunity to tie the score in the last of the sixth. Lukas Spurrier drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on another passed ball. Wilhelm hit a line drive to the shortstop and Drew Gaeng reached base on an error. After Joe Hayes struck out. Spurrier scored on a passed ball and Gaeng went to second on the play. But Gaeng was stranded at second when Carl Wolf grounded out to shortstop to end the game. Danny Ceneviva had two hits for Frederick while Brandon Foskey led Elkton with two hits. "Dominique threw the ball well." Miller said. Scotty Reynolds was Elkton’s winning pitcher with five innings of seven-hit baseball. Mark Bostwick pitched in the sixth and got the save. "Their pitcher was throwing the strikes." Miller said. "It got us a little off balance." In Saturday's win against Arbutus. Wilhelm pitched a complete game victory . He scattered six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. None of the runs he gave up were earned and those runs came in the sixth. "Donnie was getting a little tired there at the end." Miller said. "At that point we were playing for one out at a time." Ceneviva and Michael West each went 3-for-3 m Saturday's game, Ceneviva doubled in the third and West had an RBI triple in the fifth.

National ousted
HAGERSTOWN — Frederick National was eliminated from the Little League State Tournament, losing to St Mary's. 6-5, Monday at Staley Park. Frederick had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth inning. But with the bases loaded and two outs. Michael West hit a fly to the St. Mary's centerfielder, who made the game-ending catch. "They're disappointed because they know they had a chance to win tonight and last night." Said Frederick manager Danny Miller. Frederick lost to Elkton on Sunday, 4-3. "(On Monday) we had a lot of opportunities. We had the base runners. but could never come up with the key hits in the fifth and sixth innings " Frederick entered the sixth trailing 6-4. St. Mary’s reliever Michael Hall started the inning, and John Brennan greeted him with a standup double to the left field corner. Brennan then alertly swiped third when St. Mary's botched the throw back to Hall. Two groundouts later, however, Brennan was still standing on third. After Danny Ceneviva drew a walk and Dominique Smallwood received an intentional pass. Lukas Spurrier walked and plated Brennan. West was the next batter. In the fifth, Frederick failed to score after loading the bases with no outs. Frederick starter Donnie Wilhelm went the distance, striking out six, walking two, and scattering eight hits. After giving up three runs in the fourth, Wilhelm blanked St. Mary's for the final two innings. Smallwood had two hits for Frederick. In the third, Smallwood lined a solo homer over the center field fence, narrowing the St. Mary's lead to 3-2. Spurrier had two RBIs.

Brunswick wins, faces National for title
BRUNSWICK — Frederick National and Brunswick, two longtime county Little League rivals, will meet again this year to decide the District 2 11-12 Little League championship. Frederick National, the champion of the winners' bracket, hosts Brunswick in the district title game at 6 p.m. today at Robert B. Staley Stadium. Brunswick held off a sixth-inning rally by Westminster to win the losers bracket title Wednesday 9-8. Frederick National is the only unbeaten team left in the double elimination tourney and only has to beat Brunswick once to advance to its own state tournament, which begins at Staley Stadium Saturday, Aug. 1. A Brunswick win today would force an extra game to decide the district championship and that game would be played at Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday.

National wins 3rd title in row
Frederick National couldn't possibly be in better shape. The city team won its third straight District 2 11-12 Little League championship with an 11-2 win over district rival Brunswick at Robert B. Staley Stadium Thursday; advances to the state Little League Tournament, which it will host beginning Saturday, Aug. 1; and has a first-round bye in the double-elimination tourney. Frederick National will not play until the second day, Sunday, Aug. 2, when it faces the winner of an Aug. 1 first-round game between the District 4 champion and the District 7 champion. It marks only the second time in the last 14 years that a county 11-12 Little League team has won the district title and advanced to its own state tournament. The last time the state tourney was held in Frederick County was in 1964 when Brunswick won the district title, hosted and won the state tournament. "It's nice to be able to play on your own field," Frederick National manager Danny Miller said. "No road trips, no stays in a hotel room, none of that. Everyone gets to stay at home and eat some home cooking. "You get to play in front of your hometown crowd," Miller said. "That makes it pretty nice." Frederick National has won 17 district titles and is second only behind Brunswick, which has won 18 district crowns. Through the district tourney, Frederick National has relied on hitting, pitching and defense, and it got plenty of that Thursday. Garrett Hanselman led the way at the plate for Frederick National with a pair of home runs and four RBIs. He hit a two-run shot with one out in the last of the first inning and had a two-run shot in the second. Both of his homers were well beyond the left-center field wall, and one ended up on a bank in a nearby parking lot off of East Street. "The first homer I hit was an outside curve pitch," Hanselman said. "The second pitch was a fastball low and in." Carl Wolf had two hits for Frederick National, one of which was a leadoff double in the first. Zach Karmiol had a two-run homer in the first while Greg Seldon and Alan Baumann had a triple and double respectively. Frederick National's big innings were the first and second where it scored five and four runs respectively for a 9-0 lead. It also got two runs in the fifth. Dustin Brown hurled a two-hitter and struck out 13 for Frederick National. Brunswick was held to just single runs in the fourth and fifth. "Errors did us in in both games," Brunswick manager David Mohler said. "National has got a great team. They hit the ball well and they hit the ball hard. In the games we won, our bats were heavy. In the games we lost, they were light. But our guys played as hard as they could." Aaron Huegel and Phil Cooper each had hits for Brunswick.

National's big man of Little League
Miller serves as coach, groundskeeper, historian to Frederick's oldest league
FOR 20 YEARS Danny Miller has done it all for the Frederick National Little League. He has been a coach during the season and in postseason play. He is the league's head groundskeeper, statistician and historian. When the season ends he takes a group of players up to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. "I am at a loss for words to describe what he means to the league," said NL president Mike Hammond. "I just don't see how anyone could be more dedicated." Miller will do anything for the league. When the league recently built its new press box, league officials asked if someone could put in the insulation. Miller volunteered even though he knew little about insulation. "After we put all the insulation in, Mike said we had put the wrong side out," said Miller. "So we had to take it down and do it all over again." For the most part Miller's teams have been successful. His Lions team has won five league titles and never had a losing season since he became manager in 1985. In his nine years as manager of the all-star team, his teams have won four district titles, including this year. This year's title is special for Miller since National will host the state tournament for the first time since 1962. It is also the first time the state tournament has been held in Frederick city in 20 years. Miller will not only coach the local team, but along with fellow groundskeeper John Jones, will also take care of the field. Miller does all this even though he has no children of his own. He said among, other things, that National Little League is like his family. "It is a close knit group and it is fun being around here," he said. "I also want to help kids learn how to play baseball and always tell them it is important not to quit after Little League. I did and it was a big mistake." Miller played in National Little League in the early 1970s, but then decided he had had enough baseball. However, he missed the sport and two years later, at the age of 14, he was back in the league as an assistant coach with the Lions. "My best friend's dad, Muggs DeGrange, was manager of the Lions and he needed some help," Miller said as he sat in the dugout following his team's 11-2 win over Brunswick in the District 2 title game last week. "He was getting up in age and needed someone to throw batting practice. He asked me to do it and I said I would. They haven't gotten rid of me yet." Miller was the Lions assistant coach from 1978 to 1984. In 1985 he took over as manager. Miller runs his own landscaping business so it was only natural that he also got involved with the playing field. "The field is his baby," said Hammond. "He and John Jones have spent countless hours working on it." Miller has coached the all-star team for nine years, including the last five in a row. This is the third straight year the team has made it to the state tournament. Miller said baseball hasn't changed that much during his 20 years, but he has noticed a change with the parents, who many times just drop the kids off and leave. It is obvious while talking with Miller that he hasn't lost his enthusiasm for the game. "I don't get tired doing this," he said "But sometimes I do get irritated with people. If things get to me I just take a couple of days off and then come back. "One thing I really like is when people who used to be in the league come back to visit. I have people who played for me 10 years ago throwing batting practice now. There is one former player who is at the Naval Academy. During his leave he will always come out here to visit. I am always meeting a lot of different types of people, a lot of new friends. It helps keep me going." He describes himself as a quiet manager, but also a disciplinarian. "When a player makes a mistake I might yell at him," Miller said. "I like to think I run a tight ship." But he also takes care of his players. Since 1988, he has taken several players to watch the Little League World Series. "I take as many as I can get in my car which is usually about four," he said. "The first couple of years we just went up for one day, but now we stay for several days." He not only coaches baseball, but also a girls basketball team during the winter. He used to coach youth football, but that began to overlap baseball, so he stopped. "I love coaching baseball more than anything," he said. "I still get excited coaching baseball. If I didn't I would get out of it."

Tournament returns to familiar site
Frederick National hosting state event for the fourth time
When the Frederick National Little League hosts the 11-12-year-old state tournament starting Saturday, it will mark the first time the event has been held in Frederick County in 14 years. Brunswick was the last Frederick County host — in 1984. The last time a city team hosted it was 1978, when it was held at East Frederick. Frederick National also hosted the tournament in 1954, 1957 and 1962. The state tournament site annually moves from district to district. Until this year, Maryland had eight districts, meaning an eight-year gap between chances to host the event. District 2 administrator Gregg Quedeweit said he first approached Frederick National two years ago about hosting the 1998 tournament. League president Mike Hammond said it wasn't until last summer his league decided to hold the event. "We decided to do it after we went to the state tournament at Hagerstown last year and saw all the excitement" Hammond said. The tournament is expected to bring about 500 people to Frederick, including 140 players, managers and coaches. The athletes are being housed at local hotels. Quedeweit said most games will average about 250 fans and some games could draw 300 to 500 fans. "Last year at Hagerstown we had between 800 to 1,000 for one game," Quedeweit said. There is no admission charge to the games. The tournament will be played at Robert B. Staley Stadium, which is located off East Street in Frederick. The stadium recently had a $50,000 facelift, including a new pressbox and dugouts. The most significant problem could be parking since the stadium is in a residential area. However, Hammond said several area businesses have agreed to let the league use their lots. Additional bleachers have also been brought in, but they will probably not be enough to hold some of the large crowds. "People will be sitting on the hills or just standing around," Quedeweit said. "They will be all over the place." The league also plans to set up a 30-by-80-foot tent for a concessions and dining area. The Frederick National Little League is the oldest in Frederick. The league began in 1951 as the Frederick Little League. The first president was Jim Grove. Thurmont formed a team in 1953, Brunswick in 1955, Frederick American in 1956, Emmitsburg in 1957 and East Frederick became the sixth team 1963. The National League is the only one in Frederick that was managed by a major league player. Frederick native and former New York Yankees star Charley Keller managed the team in 1952 and 1953. Each year the team went to the regional tournament, with Frederick losing in the title game in 1953. The most successful Frederick County team was the Brunswick team of 1986, going all the way to the World Series in Williamsport, Pa. It is the Only county team and one of only four Maryland teams to advance that far. Brunswick lost its first game in the Little League World Series to Sarasota, Fla., 5-0 but split its final two games to finish sixth in the world. Brunswick has won 18 district titles and Frederick National 17. Frederick National has won five titles in the 1990s. Only seven times since 1952 has Frederick County not sent a team to the state tournament. Brunswick has won six state titles and Frederick National five. The last time a county team won a state title was in 1995, when Brunswick beat Hagerstown American.

The wait ends, 11-12 Little League state tourney starts today
The wait finally ends at noon today when the state Little League tournament officially begins at Robert B. Staley Memorial Stadium, the home of Frederick National Little League. The seven-team, double-elimination tournament marks the first time in 20 years that a Frederick City league has hosted the state tournament. The last time was in 1978, when East Frederick hosted what was then a single-elimination event. The last time a county league held a state tournament was in 1984, when Brunswick hosted and won the event. Little League went to a double-elimination format in the state tournament in 1981. Teams began arriving at the Holiday Inn on U.S. 40 West early Friday afternoon, Frederick National president Mike Hammond said. Only four of the seven teams required lodging, which is being done at several hotels, Hammond said. The four teams are West Salisbury (District 8), Easton (District 6), Hughesville (District 7) and Elkton (Districts). "The other three teams (Halfway, District 1), ourselves (Frederick National, District 2), and Arbutus (District 4) will commute," Hammond said. The seven teams and their managers coaches, league officials and players were honored at a banquet Friday at the Independent Hose Co. No. 1 on Baughman's Lane. The opening ceremony begins today at 10 at Staley Stadium. Halfway and Easton play in the noon game today while Elkton faces West Salisbury at 3. The final game today will feature Arbutus against Hughesville at 6. Frederick National has drawn a first round bye and will play the Arbutus-Hughesville winner at 6 p.m. Sunday. The tourney continues through Thursday. If an extra game is needed to determine a state champion it will be played Friday.

National loses state opener
Hughesville’s Jacob Miller hit the shot every kid dreams about — a game-ending home run. Miller hit a one-out, two-run home run in the last of the sixth inning, giving Hughesville an 8-7 win over Frederick National in the state 11-12 Little League Tournament on Sunday at Robert B. Staley Stadium While the homer was a dream shot for Hughesville, it was a nightmare for Frederick National, which now falls into the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament and faces Easton at 6 p.m. today, Hughesville meets Elkton for the championship of the winners bracket at 6 pm Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Elkton defeated Halfway 13-5. Frederick National nearly lost the game minutes earlier in the top of the sixth with one out and Hughesville leading 6-5. But Carl Wotf singled to left field, moved to second on a Hughesville error and went to third when Garrett Hanselman grounded out to first base. Wolf scored when Dustin Brown beat out an infield single to tie the score at 6. Brown hit leadoff Hughesville batter Mike Garrett with a pitch. Garrett was sacrificed to second by Frank Fowler. Miller then hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center field to end the game. "Miller is a good hitter and he's the leadoff man in their batting order," Frederick National manager Danny Miller said. "Dustin had no control on his curveballs and stuck with mainly the fastball I think they were timing his fastballs and Miller just waited on it They knew it was coming." Brawn, normally a top pitcher for Frederick National, had control problems the entire game. He gave up five hits with six strikeouts and three walks and he hit two batters. The game had a back-and-forth momentum to it with Frederick National taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a fielder's choice. But Hughesville's Brent Hooper singled in a run in the last of the Second to tie the score Frederick National scored a run on an error to lead 2-1 in the third but Hughesville got two runs in the fourth when Mike Garrett's sacrifice bunt squeezed in a ran and the other run score on an error. Frederick National went up 5-3 in the fifth when Wolf lead off with a solo homer over the left-center field wall. The other two runs scored on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Aaron Gladhill. But even that lead wasn’t safe Hughesville got a run in the last of the fifth on a double by Daryl Thompson, a groundout and an error. "We got some bad breaks," Miller said "We didn't cash in on the opportunities we had and couldn't get the clutch hits." Miller had two hits for Hughesville while Wolf and Gladhill each had three hits. Drew Gaeng had two hits for Frederick National Mark Magill got the win in relief for Hughesville

National survives
Frederick National staved off elimination in the 11-12-year-old Little League State Tournament on Monday with a 9-4 win over Easton at Robert B Staley Stadium. Frederick National advances to the semifinals of the losers' bracket, where it will play a 3 p m. contest today against Halfway, an 11-0 winner over Arbutus earlier on Monday. The loss eliminates Easton from the tournament. The only two unbeaten learns left in the double-elimination tournament play later today. Elkton will face Hughesville for the championship of the winners' bracket at 6 pm "We live to play another day," Frederick National manager Danny Miller said "The breaks went our way today. We didn't throw the ball around like we did against Hughesville (in Sunday's 8-6 loss). We didn't make the mental mistakes we made Sunday" Frederick National's Dustin Brown, the losing pitcher in Sunday's game, came through with a clutch hit Monday. National was leading 4-3 going into the top of the fourth inning when Carl Wolf led off with a single and Drew Gaeng struck out. Garrett Hanseiman walked to put runners at first and second. Brown followed by hitting the first offering from Easton pitcher Taylor Leeson over the right-center field wall for a three-run home run. Frederick National added two runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Wolf and Gaeng. "Things aren't going to get any easier," Miller said. "Halfway has got some good sticks." Frederick National took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out solo homer over the left field wall by Shawn Taylor. Easton answered with three runs in the last of the second on a two-run double by Danny Ryan. Ryan later scored on a passed ball that gave Easton a 3-1 lead. Frederick National went up 4-3 in the third, scoring two runs on two wild pitches and the third on a bases-loaded walk Easton got its final run in the fourth on a Frederick National error. Wolf had three hits to lead Frederick National while Greg Seldon had two. Wolf was the winning pitcher, giving up six hits, striking out six and walking one. "Carl had some problems with his curveball but he was able to place the ball better," Miller said. "In the end, he knew to just play for one out at a time. He was able to throw the strikes, and it seems like they would hit the balls right to us." Kevin Weems had two hits for Easton, including a leadoff double in the first. Leeson went the distance on the mound for Easton and gave up 10 hits. He fanned 14 and walked eight.

Halfway ousts National
Another game-ending home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and another nightmare for Frederick National. Andy May's leadoff home run in the sixth broke a 4-4 tie and gave Halfway a 5-4 win, eliminating Frederick National from the 11-12-year old Little League State Tournament on Tuesday at Robert B. Staley Stadium. Halfway will face Elkton in the losers' bracket championship today at 6 p.m. "We've always been competitive when we play in these tournaments," Frederick National manager Danny Miller said. "We've kept the games close, and our two losses were one-run ballgames." It marks the second straight year Frederick National has gone 1-2 in the state tournament. Frederick National led 4-0 going into the last of the fifth when Halfway, a team known for comeback victories, scored four runs to tie the score R J. Mitchell singled in a pair of runs while Jordan Duvall was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded and Bengie Bingaman singled in a run. In the sixth, May took the first pitch from Frederick National's Dustin Brown and sent it beyond the center field wall for the game-winning home run. It was the second straight time Frederick National lost on a game-ending home run. Hughesville's Jacob Miller belted a two-run shot with one out in the last of the sixth to beat Frederick National on Sunday 8-6. "We got to him last time," Miller said of May. May had struck out in his first plate appearance back in the second A pinch-hitter had replaced him in the fourth but struck out, and May was reentered in the sixth. "We wanted to jam him with an inside pitch first, but I think the pitch may have been to the outside a little too much," Miller said Despite giving up the home run ball in the sixth, Brown finished with 10 strikeouts, three walks and five hits allowed. "Dustin did a better job of pitching today than on Sunday," said Miller "He had better control." Frederick National took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer by Garrett Hanselman. Frederick National added two more runs in the fourth on a double by Carl Wolf and an error. "We had runners in scoring position but could not get them in," Miller said "You have to do that when you reach this level." Frederick stranded eight base runners. Wolf had two hits for Frederick. For Halfway, Nick Adenhart gave up four hits with five walks.

American posts win in opener
Frederick American's Andrew Presnell had problems with his pitching against crosstown rival Frederick National on Thursday, but he made up for it with one swing of his bat in the top of the fourth inning Presnell. the starting pitcher for American, couldn't retire any of the three batters he faced but his two out. RBI single in the fourth triggered a four-run inning which helped launch his team to an 8-6 win in the opening round of the District 2 11-12 Little League Tournament at Austin F Angleberger Memorial Stadium. American hosts East Frederick at 6 p m today in the second game of a four-game, pool-play series. In other district action Thursday. East Frederick rallied in the sixth inning to edge Westminster National, 3-2. Frederick National took advantage of Presnell's control problems to take a 1-0 lead in the last of the first on a bases-loaded walk issued by reliever Sean Engle. Presnell's single, which scored Ty Main, who had reached base on a fielder's choice, tied the score at 1. On the same play, an outfielder's error allowed an additional run to score. Mark Hammond and Sintaron Yuhki followed with RBI singles and Frederick American led 4- 1. Frederick American got a single run in the fifth on a single by Main and added three runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Sean Courtney and a bases-loaded walk. Hammond and Yuhki each had two hits for Frederick American. Yuhki earned a save in the sixth. Frederick National scored once in the fifth and nearly rallied with four runs in the sixth before Yuhki shut the door, retiring two of the four batters he faced. Zach Converse had two hits for Frederick National.
NOTES — The 10-team district tournament field has been reduced with the departure of New Windsor. Most of New Windsor's players had family vacations planned prior to the tournament, which could not be changed As a result, all of New Windsor's games in pool play will be forfeited. District 2 administrator Gregg Quedeweit said. East Frederick, Frederick American, Frederick National and Westminster National all will receive forfeit victories, Quedeweit said.

National wins without playing
Rain or shine on Friday, Frederick National was getting a win over New Windsor in the second round of the District 2 11-12 Little League Tournament. The city team was awarded a victory by forfeit because New Windsor did not show up for the game. As it turns out, that was the only area Little League team to record any kind of a win Friday. Strong thunderstorms and heavy rains moved through the area in the afternoon, postponing all of the district Little League events. All have been rescheduled for today, weather permitting. Today's slate includes East Frederick at Frederick American, Thurmont at Brunswick and Westminster at Taneytown. District Little League officials knew in advance that New Windsor would not show up for the game, district administrator Gregg Quedeweit said. Most of the players had committed to already-paid vacations and those plans could not be altered, Quedeweit said. But even with that knowledge, Little League regulations dictated Frederick National be ready to play the game anyway, Quedeweit said. "They were to show up at their ball park (Staley Stadium), where the game was to be played, ready to play," Quedeweit said. "When New Windsor does not show up at game time, the regulations call for a 10- minute wait. "Then, a call goes into Bristol, Conn. (Eastern Regional headquarters), and they are notified a team has failed to show for their scheduled game," Quedeweit said. Officials in Bristol then award the forfeit, Quedeweit said. Since this year's district play is round-robin through the first rounds, the same process with New Windsor has to be repeated for its other three opponents in the pool, Quedeweit said. East Frederick, Westminster American and Frederick American will also pick up forfeit wins, Quedeweit said. "New Windsor did have a full team," Quedeweit said. "As I understand, they had a good team lined up."

National edges out East Frederick
Frederick National manager Dale Winpigler wanted his players to chip away at East Frederick's lead in the fifth inning so they wouldn't have to score as many runs in the sixth. National did even better than that. Deke Gaeng had the game-winning RBI to cap a five-run rally in the fifth as National pulled out an 8-7 comeback win over East Frederick in the District II 11-12 Little League Baseball Tournament at East Frederick Little League on Monday. East Frederick, which was the last unbeaten team in Group B, will conclude pool play with a forfeit win over New Windsor today and improve to 3-1. All four Group B teams have one loss with two games left Frederick American at Westminster today at 8:30 p.m. and Westminster at Frederick National on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Wins by National (2-1) and American (l-l, with a forfeit over New Windsor still to come) would force a three-way tie for first with East Since each team has a win in head-to-head meetings, the tie would be broken by the number of runs each team allowed East Frederick had a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but National scored five runs on three hits. "We just got the base hits when we needed them," Winpigler said "I told them to get a couple runs that inning, and they wouldn't have to worry about them all in the sixth. But they got them all in the fifth." Dave Thomas' two-run single tied the game, 7-7. Gaeng then knocked in Brandon Hngsbury with a single to center. Thomas Mills and Tony Allen had RBIs earlier in the fifth. National also took advantage of two East Frederick errors in the rally. "Being down 7-3, they never let up and I give them credit for that," East Frederick manager Tom Kelly said "Our defense let up in the fifth. But give credit — National did come back and take advantage." Austin Vesper, Kenny Houck, Danny Edwards and Rodney Baker each had RBI’s. Base hits to spark a five-run rally in the second that gave East Frederick a 5-1 lead National's Chaz Remus, who gave up two runs in four innings of relief, earned the win. Bobby Humphries, who homered, Vesper, Edwards and Brent Mashburn each had two hits for East Frederick.
